We were moving cows to a new paddock today and got a big (well small) surprise - one of our heifers had calved, we didn't think she was due until about March (from when she officially socialised with a bull). I saw her last Sunday (6 days ago) and did not realise how close she must have been. She was not bagged at all. Comparing the calf to the other 7 who have been born in the last 2 weeks, I would guess that she is about 4 days old. That would make it about 6 days early from when a young bull we had jumped the fence to visit the girls. (He went to the freezer not long after). It brings the total to 6 boys and 2 girls over 12 days. That should be it until March, but I will be checking on a few other cows who may also have been visited. Both Heather and her daughter let us give them a scratch and Mum let David draw milk while she was in the paddock. This is the sort of surprise that I don't mind.
