The meat cuts proved to be interesting with the painting of the actual cuts on a heifer with tail paint, which yes will wash off. Then a quiz to follow to check who was listening and who was not. Pam MacFarlane and Fran Maxwell won with 14 out of 14, a Dexter mug and a bottle of wine. We also awarded a prize to Chris Adams who said it should all be sausages, except the eye fillet, as he loves Dexter sausages. Which was good as we were having a sausage sizzle for lunch.
We then had the two heifers on halters, they had only been haltered once before, so we thought we could be in for some excitement. But the smaller of the two who is about 12 months old was an angel, even letting us check her teat placement on her udder. The older heifer rising two was a little more fiesty but not anywhere near as bad as we expected.
Most made a halter to take home and at that point Mark & I left for home a 3 and a half hour drive.
It was a great day, even if a tad cold, and everyone seemed to have learnt something. Many thanks to Sue & Daryl Crawford for allowing us all to come to your property and see your delightful cattle.
